Liverpool suffer blow in chase for Serbian midfielder

There were shrugs of disappointment in the Football Transfer Tavern this morning after news broke that Liverpool target Nemanja Matic is ready to sign a new contract at Benfica that will increase his release clause to £24.6 million.

Following the departure of Javi Garcia to Manchester City, the one time Chelsea youngster has established himself as a key member of the Portuguese club this season and that has led to speculation linking him back to the Premier League.

Liverpool are known to be keen on the 24-year-old with Brendan Rodgers looking to add some steel to his midfield in the transfer window, however talkSPORT now claim that Matic is on the edge of agreeing a new contract at Benfica that will see his current deal extended until 2018 and importantly increase his buy out clause in the process.

The Anfield outfit will not be prepared to spend that much on the Serbian midfielder as they are seeking value in the transfer market and talkSPORT suggest that it is certain to end their pursuit of Matic.
