Liverpool suffer blow in pursuit of £18m-rated midfielder

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate to see a few new signings this summer…

The Reds have been on a downward spiral in recent weeks, with Jurgen Klopp clearly lacking the squad depth to see him through until the end of the season.

It came as a boost, then, to the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern when it was revealed via the Sun that the Reds were reportedly looking into signing West Ham midfielder Pedro Obiang. A midfield enforcer at the London Stadium, many in the Transfer Tavern touted him as the perfect man for the job at Anfield.

However, those plans have now seemingly taken a hit – with Sky Sports reporting that West Ham are set to open talks with Obiang over a proposed new deal. Impressed with his form, Bilic is reportedly keen to reward the midfielder.

Whilst the report does not suggest that talks are underway or that Obiang will necessarily sign on – it is certainly a blow for Liverpool. A new contract almost certainly means rejection if they did make a move, or at the very least it would increase his transfer fee.

Obiang has made 19 starts in the Premier League this season, scoring and assisting once.

It is easy to see where Obiang would fit into the Liverpool first team, offering some dynamic passing and unstoppable midfield tenacity – two traits that the Reds have dearly lacked this season.
