Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is ready to make a move for out of favour Roma defender Philippe Mexes as the 63 year old looks to strengthen the Red’s defensive life.
The Merseyside club have made a difficult start to the season finding themselves in the relegation zone after 8 games and while many see the main problem is the lack of attacking power at the club at present, their inability to keep clean sheets is very much a concern for Hodgson and one he is looking to remedy immediately.
Despite becoming a regular starter in Laurent Blanc’s French side, Mexes has struggled to get on with new Roma boss Claudio Ranieri, finding himself way down the pecking order at the Italian club.
With a new cash injection at Anfield through American John W. Henry taking control of the Merseyside club, Hodgson is believed to have a healthy transfer budget of around £40 million in order to help ensure Liverpool finish the season closer to the top of the season than the bottom.
However, if Liverpool are succeed in bringing the 28 year old defender to England, they will have to compete with both AC Milan and Juventus who are both believed to be monitoring the situation regarding the former Auxerre player, ready to make a move should he become available.
Its difficult to know whether Liverpool could match the appeal which AC Milan holds, with the Italian side taking part in this years Champions League, but with a number of world class players at the Anfield club and the allure of the prestigious English Premier League, Hodgson may just be able to secure a deal to bring Mexes to the club and help kick start Liverpool’s season by building from the back.
