Metro have a rather interesting story for Liverpool fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern as they note that Brazilian international forward Diego Costa has denied all reports of a departure from Atletico Madrid this summer.
The player was first linked to Liverpool last January and it was thought that both Brendan Rodgers and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger were keen on bringing the player to England.
Now however the forward has spoken about his desire to stay in Madrid and help kick Diego Simeone’s side forward after winning yet another trophy last campaign in the form of the Copa del Rey and also seeing his side push local rivals Real Madrid hard for the runners-up spot behind Barcelona in La Liga.
Speaking after Los Colchoneros’ pre-season tour of South America, Costa noted how happy he was and in news that will be music to Simeone’s ears after the club had to deal with the departure of star man Radamel Falcao, claimed: “I’m well here, I’m happy here.
“As I’ve been in Argentina and Uruguay I’ve not heard anything about this. I’m happy here, if the club want me to be here, I’m going to be here.
“I think that the coach (Diego Simeone) counts on all of us, not just me. He knows how important it is to maintain the squad, the fans know it as well.”
Despite tabling a reported £22 million bid for the player (reports that were denied in the Spanish press) Liverpool do not look like landing Costa this summer and also have the future of Luis Suarez to sweat over.
Was Diego Costa the signing that Rodgers wanted to replace wantaway Suarez? What will Rodgers do now? Let us know your thoughts below.
