It’s a bit quiet in the Football Transfer Tavern this morning but there is some heated Liverpool discussion as MirrorFootball journalist David McDonnell arrives with claims that Benfica left-back Lorenzo Melgarejo is a surprise loan target for the Reds.
McDonnell grabs a bar stool and sits down to explain that Brendan Rodgers wants to recruit a solid back-up to Jose Enrique, who has struggled with injuries in past two seasons at Anfield.
The former Swansea manager has now outlined a short-term deal for the 22-year-old versatile defender as the ideal solution to Enrique’s consistent injury issues.
Melgarejo impressed for the Portuguese side last season after being converted from a left-sided midfielder to full-back by coach Jorge Jesus and featured against Chelsea in their Europa League final defeat. He is now eager for a high-profile move with Arsenal and Fenerbahce interested in the Paraguayan international this summer.
The Reds want to sign the defender on loan, with a view to a longer-term transfer however they would have to apply for a tricky work permit due to the defender only picking up one senior cap for his country although they are thought to be confident in succeeding.
French international Aly Cissokho is also on Rodgers’ radar as he looks for possible cover in defence, but the club have yet to agree acceptable wage demands with the 25-year-old which makes the South American star the next best alternative.
