Following Manchester City’s return to the top of the Premier League on Saturday, Liverpool’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur could not have become any more important. A win for Jurgen Klopp’s side would put the pressure firmly back on the Citizen’s as the campaign starts to wind down.
And, it appears the manager has received some encouraging news ahead of the clash with Spurs that gives them a great chance of coming away with the three points on Sunday.
What’s the News?
Klopp has revealed to the club’s official website that Trent Alexander-Arnold, Xherdan Shaqiri and Joe Gomez are all available for the match against Tottenham – although the latter of the trio may not be involved.
All three returned to training on Friday and managed to get through it without any concerns, with Klopp confirming that they should all be OK.
“Yesterday they were all in training, for all three pretty much the first full session, so we have to see how they react,” he told his pre-match press conference (via the club’s website). “There was actually no alternative for Shaq and Trent, not being involved in the games in that period. Anything else would have been really crazy because they needed that, they needed treatment, needed rehab and all that stuff.”
He added: “Joe was back yesterday after 15 weeks, what a long time, but yesterday it looked really good. Of course, it’s early stages and he is really now adapting again to proper football training after having thousands of rehab sessions. They should all be OK, I heard nothing different this morning since I’ve been here, so they should be OK. They will train again today and then we will see.”
The news that the trio are all back available ahead of the game against Tottenham which will be encouraging news for Klopp and Liverpool.
Alexander-Arnold has been a key figure for the Reds this season as he has burst onto the scene and made the right-back position his own when available. The England international has been a really important member of the first-team and his absences in the past have been rather evident at times, so his potential return will be welcomed by those at Anfield.
Shaqiri has had to play a bit-part role at the club since joining from Stoke City in the summer, however, he has popped up with some important contributions for Klopp’s side at times and can provide Liverpool with a useful option from the substitutes bench, as he can help to change how the game is going and turn it into their favour.
As mentioned, it is unlikely that Gomez will actually feature against Tottenham on Sunday, however, his return to full training is a huge boost and one that could be the difference in helping the club lift silverware – whether that be the Premier League title or the Champions League (or even both!).
The England international formed a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk before he was injured in December and reuniting that relationship in the middle of the field will be something Liverpool fans will be excited to see happen in the very near future.
Liverpool fans, how good is it to hear that the trio are back in full training? Could they help the club with their aims of winning silverware this season? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
