Liverpool to battle with Manchester United for £25m star

Nemanja MaticJosh McLoughlin from Here Is The City has attracted attention in the Football Transfer Tavern this evening.

Although it’s not his rather interesting tweed jacket that has caught the eye but his apparent knowledge of the latest transfer battle that has whetted the appetite for the upcoming opening of the window.

McLoughlin takes a seat near the bar and explains that he believes Liverpool and Manchester United will go head to head to secure Nemanja Matic as Benfica look to cash in on their star midfielder.

The Portuguese club are about to crash out the Champions League in the group stages, despite budgeting for further progression, and this could leave the Lisbon giants with a cash flow situation that see them selling Matic to the highest bidder in January.

McLoughlin suggests that both Liverpool and United have been linked with the Serbian international in the past and given Benfica’s financial position they could now move for the hard tackling midfielder.

Matic actually started his career at Chelsea but moved to Portugal as part of the deal that took David Luiz to Stamford Bridge but he has since developed into one of the most highly regarded defensive mifielders in European football.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is a known admirer of Matic and could move to strengthen his central area of the park in the January window although McLoughlin indicates that United will pose strong competition.

Most in the tavern realise that the Red Devils are still chasing a strong middle man as Moyes look to push summer signing Marouane Fellaini into a more attacking role and playing Matic alongside Michael Carrick could work wonders for the former Everton manager, who has so far struggled during his time at Old Trafford.

Where do you think Matic will end up? Let us know your thoughts below.
