In news that has shocked us here at the Football Transfer Tavern we have been discussing the possibility that Xabi Alonso may well be on his way back to Anfield – well according to talkSPORT at least.
The midfielder has long been rumoured to be on the move with his contract talks at Real Madrid stalling and the Merseyside club reporetdly want to take the midfielder back. Alonso of course is a vital part of Real Madrid’s side and is most certainly one of Jose Mourinho’s most important squad members.
However, the 31-year-old has seen contract talks stall in recent months and this is not the first time we have been discussing the possibility that he may well leave the Spanish champions. Alonso of course spent a hugely successful time at Liverpool and was one of the key players who turned round the Champions League deficit and won the famous game in Istanbul.
For their part, Real are determined to keep hold of the player that they feel could well make the difference in big games and they are only too aware of the fact that the last time they had such a presence in midfield and let him go – Claude Makeklele – they did not win a trophy for a substantial amount of time after that. Liverpool of course would secure a massive coup should they manage to lure Alonso back.
