According to The Independent, Liverpool have sounded out Klaas-Jan Huntelaar as the man to do it.
The 30-year-old, who is currently on international duty with the Netherlands at the World Cup, will now hold talks with Schalke to discuss his options.
He has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Tottenham and Manchester United showing interest in the past.
And a deal now looks more likely than ever because the Dutchman has just one year left on his deal at the German club.
The former Real Madrid and AC Milan striker admits he is aware of Premier League speculation but refused to discuss where he would like to go.
“Regarding the rumours about Liverpool it would only be fair to speak to Schalke first,” he told De Telegraaf.
“I’ve talked with Schalke about an extension for a while. After the World Cup I am having a holiday. Then I will speak to them again.
“With my agent, I now do not talk about the interest from clubs. I focus on the tournament.”
Liverpool fans. Hunterlaar would be available fairly cheaply. Can he do a job in the Premier League? Let us know your thoughts below.
