We do have a place in our hearts for often overlooked Barcelona youngster Sergi Roberto here in the Football Transfer Tavern.
Today, the Daily Star report that both Tottenham and Liverpool are set to fight it out for the latest star off the production line at the Camp Nou, bringing excitement to all punters in the tavern.
The paper reports that the two Premier League clubs are trying to secure the signature of Roberto, as the youngster struggles for regular game time under Gerardo Martino.
According to Spanish reports, both clubs have made enquiries for the midfielder as they look to add to their ranks in January.
The 21-year-old possesses an £18 million release clause in his contract and that could see him heading to the Premier League after only featuring for the Barca first team seven times since making his debut in 2010.
Italian giants AC Milan have already asked about the youngster but the Spanish Under-21 international reportedly favours a switch to England as he seeks regular football to aid his development.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will be looking to bring in more attack minded players, with Victor Moses’ loan expiring at the end of the season and Iago Aspas set to leave in January after failing to find his feet in the Premier League.
Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas will be likely to challenge any bid from his side’s Premier League rivals, with the North London outfit struggling to create chances from open play so far this term.
AVB has also made no secret of the fact that he has been scouting Barcelona’s younger players, but will find it hard to accomodate Roberto football week in, week out, with summer signings Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen, Nacer Chadli and Paulinho all fighting for first team places as it is.
