It’s a bit quiet in the Football Transfer Tavern today but there’s some heated Liverpool debate as Daily Star journalist Garry Doyle arrives with bold claims that West Bromwich Albion striker Shane Long is a transfer target for the Reds.
With Fabio Borini out until the new year, Liverpool are eager to add striking reinforcements to help support lone front-man Luis Suarez and Doyle asserts that contact has been made with Long’s agent about a possible move in the upcoming transfer window.
Long, who has netted seven times in 14 games for the Baggies so far, worked with Rodgers during his spell as manager at Reading and it appears the two could reunite at Anfield. The 25-year-old moved to the Hawthorns for £6 million in 2011 and still has two-and-half years to run on his current deal.
The Republic of Ireland international was interesting Liverpool in 2010 before he decided to join West Brom and reports suggest he would jump at the chance to play under his former boss at the Reds.
With the Baggies currently in fifth and pushing for their highest ever finish in the Premier League, manager Steve Clarke will be very reluctant to sell his star striker, however Doyle made it clear that he believes an offer of around £12m would be enough to secure Long’s services.
