The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are fearful about their side’s goalkeeping situation. The duo of Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet – neither of whom have impressed this season – are Jurgen Klopp’s only choices for the rest of the campaign, and that is far from an ideal situation.
Indeed, you could argue that the main thing separating Liverpool from the sides around them is their goalkeeping situation. Man City have Ederson, Man Utd have David De Gea, Chelsea have Thibaut Courtois and Tottenham have Hugo Lloris. That quartet are arguably amongst the top five or six goalkeepers in the world – and that highlights Liverpool’s deficiencies.
Fortunately, then, it’s good to hear that the Reds are looking to solve that problem. Indeed, as reported by El Confidencial, Liverpool are amongst the suitors for Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
A two-time UEFA Champions League (UCL) winner, Navas has been the main man between the sticks for Real Madrid over the last few years, and for the most part, he has been a decent choice.
Whilst a Liverpool move is not said to be imminent, the fact that the Reds are considering alternative options should provide the Anfield faithful with confidence that the issue is being worked on.
Navas, it is said, is keen to finish his contract (expires 2020) with Real Madrid, but whether that happens – and indeed whether Liverpool will follow up on their interest – remains to be seen.
Navas doesn’t get much credit, given how many high-profile names are in the mix at the Bernabeu, but he’s a top keeper. You don’t win Europe’s premier prize without having talent.
Whether he’s the long-term solution that Liverpool need, though, given that he’s already 31-years-old, remains to be seen. It won’t be easy to land him, either, given the circumstances.
