The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern want their side to sign a few defenders in January. The Reds have struggled at the back this season, and it’s clear that January will be a crucial time for the club. They’re struggling to compete at the top of the Premier League table, and so if they are to have any chance of getting close to Man City and Man Utd, a few major acquisitions will be needed in January.
However, one player that doesn’t look likely to move to Anfield in January is Swiss defender Manuel Akanji, who currently plays for FC Basel. Liverpool are apparently keen on the defender, according to the Independent, but they have decided to wait until next summer in their bid to sign him.
The Independent reports that this could give them the upper hand on Borussia Dortmund, who are also said to be keen, as FC Basel are hesitant to let their highly-rated left-back leave during the middle of the season.
Manuel Akanji has emerged as one of Europe’s brightest young talents, and he is beginning to build quite the reputation for himself in his native Switzerland. A 4-cap Swiss international, he has picked up 18 starts in the Swiss League, and at 22-years-old, there is a lot of scope for improvement.
Liverpool, then, are clearly playing this one tactically as they look to land him. With Andy Robertson impressing, there isn’t an immediate rush for ar replacement, but Akanji would certainly improve the Liverpool defence long-term.
By all accounts, Liverpool’s decision to hold off on this move until the summer could be a fantastic move from the club, with a deal seemingly much more likely at that point.
Alberto Moreno could well be on the move at the end of the season, having struggled to impress once again, and Akanji would be the perfect replacement.
