Liverpool transfer target available on a free next summer

Xabi AlonsoGary Jones from the Daily Star has brought news that Liverpool fans gathered around the bar have waited to hear for a long time.

The journalist reports that the Reds are in pole position to sign former Reds hero Xabi Alonso at the end of the season when his contract with Real Madrid expires.

The Spanish international midfielder is understood to have rejected a new contract from the Bernabeu side and will be available on a free transfer next summer.

Liverpool have been strongly linked with the midfielder who could return to the Premier League as he seeks a new chapter in his career.

However the Reds are likely to face competition from Serie A side Fiorentina who reportedly have ambitions to bring the 31-year-old to Florence by offering him a massively lucrative contract.

Alonso’s long-term future with the Spanish giants looks decidedly grim after the summer arrival of Asier Illarramendi from Real Sociedad, who many see a direct replacement for the one-time Sociedad man who became such a legend at Anfield.

This increased competition for places in Carlo Ancelotti’s side could see him declining the reported new contract on offer as he seeks regular first team football.

The midfielder has been back in Spain since August 2009 after signing for Real on a £30 million deal from the Reds but he has always stated his love for Liverpool and to finish his distinguished career with the club where he spent five successful years could work out for all parties.

Will Liverpool bring back Alonso next summer and would you want him to return? Let us know your thoughts below.
