Some Liverpool supporters have arrived in the Football Transfer Tavern today in order to update their fantasy football team following the closure of the transfer window last week.
They are discussing possible new options for their respective sides when reports arrive fromr regional punlication The Derby Telegraph that suggest Derby County could sell Reds target Will Hughes in the January transfer window.
Constant speculation has surrounded the 18-year-old’s future at Derby in the tavern and the England Under-21 international has previously been linked with a move to the Premier League with the Reds thought to be leading the chase.
However despite the reported interest from Anfield, no offers were submitted for Hughes before the transfer window slammed shut last Monday and he remains plying his trade in the Championship at Pride Park.
Rams manager Nigel Clough has admitted that he was surprised no firm offers came in for Hughes.
He said: “We were quite surprised but nicely surprised. There is money splashing around in the Premier League at the moment with certain teams.
“In the last few days before the window closed, Liverpool spent £25 million on a couple of defenders and Arsenal ended up spending around £40 million on one player.
“I think Premier League clubs want players for the here and now. They want players who can go into their first team now.”
Derby say they have not put a price tag on Hughes but that he will not be sold on the cheap with Liverpool understood to be readying an £8 million bid in the last few weeks as Brendan Rodgers looks to add more quality to his Reds team.
Clough added: “It is difficult to put a specific valuation on him – but we know what we won’t take, that is for certain. I think there will be interest in Will in January.”
With Derby refusing to put a price tag on his head, what is Hughes realistically worth? Let us know your thoughts below.
