According to the Daily Star, the Merseyside club made an approach for Switzerland international winger Xherdan Shaqiri.
However, Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich were unwilling to sign off the deal, deciding to keep their talent who was acquired from FC Basel.
Brendan Rodgers signed nine new players for Liverpool this summer following the £75 million sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.
However, Shaqiri admits that his future at the Bundesliga champions is unclear, further conceding that he will consider his future in January when he assesses how much first team action he had obtained in the first half of the season.
Shaqiri said: “Liverpool made a bid for me but Bayern put their foot down and told me, ‘We’re not going to sell you’.
“My contract runs until 2016 and I could possibly extend it. I will consider my decision during the winter break.”
Liverpool fans may be shown what they are missing as early as Monday though with the attacker expected to start against England in the European Championship Qualifier in Basel.
