Liverpool turn their attention towards Frenchman in search of Coutinho replacement

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are still upset after seeing their prize asset Philippe Coutinho depart the club. Coutinho has left to join Barcelona in a deal which makes him the second most expensive player in history and now Liverpool need to start searching for his replacement.

The Reds have been considering their options, according to reports in the local media, and have identified a top target already. Liverpool are believed to be interested in AS Monaco star Thomas Lemar, The Liverpool Echo reports.

Lemar has been a target for a host of Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, but Liverpool hope to beat their competitors to the signing of the young Frenchman. The 22-year-old can play on either wing and he is considered to be one of the best young talents in Europe.

The 22-year-old has two goals and four assists in Ligue 1 this season for Monaco and Barcelona have previously checked on him. Lemar is thought to be Liverpool’s top target.

But Monaco want to keep hold of the 8-cap France international midfielder, especially after selling star players in the summer. Furthemore, Liverpool will not be moving for Riyad Mahrez, the Echo understands, contrary to recent reports.

Landlord’s verdict

Liverpool need to ask themselves two questions. Firstly, whether Lemar can step into Coutinho’s role as a more central attacking midfielder. Secondly, how much are we going to pay for him? Clubs know that Liverpool have just received a huge amount of cash and they will accordingly demand hefty transfer fees.
