Liverpool are close to agreeing on a new contract for European Footballer of the Year Virgil van Dijk.
According to a report from The Mirror, the giant Dutch defender has agreed terms on a new six-year deal with the Reds in a move which will see his wages take a jump up to around £200,000-a-week.
Van Dijk has been superb since moving to Anfield and his form and consistency was rewarded when he was named the European Footballer of the Year just a few weeks ago ahead of the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The former Celtic and Southampton man moved to Liverpool in a mega-money deal and has made an instant impact for Jurgen Klopp’s men, helping the Reds to 20 clean sheets in the Premier League last season as they came up just short of Manchester City at the top of the table.
He is key to how Liverpool set up from the back, and made over 3000 passes last season at an average of 79.9 per game. This is impressive when compared against one of Liverpool’s top midfielders in Georginio Wijnaldum, who made just over 1700 passes and 50 per game.
Liverpool will no doubt be hoping for van Dijk to lead them to more success following their impressive Champions League victory last season.
This is a massive boost for Liverpool and a smart move from the club to tie down arguably their best player.
The likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona are always going to be sniffing round the best players, with the likes of Philippe Coutinho and most recently Eden Hazard departing England for Spain, so this gives Liverpool some security in that sense.
