Liverpool made more attacking signings in the summer and have once again gotten off to the sort of start in the Premier League which highlights their need for defensive reinforcements.
Reds manager Jurgen Klopp will have known full well this summer that he needed more at the back, but missed on main target Virgil Van Dijk, choosing instead to add the likes of Mo Salah, and for next season, Naby Keita.
Our landlord here in the Tavern though thinks that Liverpool and Klopp have let someone slip through the net who has already been impressing in the Premier League. That player? Spurs defender and summer captures Davinson Sanchez.
The former Ajax starlet has been mightily impressive so far in his first season in the Premier League, slotting into life in the top flight with ease. He has dropped into the Spurs starting line-up alongside Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, and looked every bit the assured presence Spurs needed.
For a player so young, Sanchez has so much confidence and possesses a manner which suggests he’s simply made to be a world class defender at the highest level.
Liverpool could and probably should have been attempting to sign Sanchez for themselves, and while Spurs reap the rewards of the talented youngster, Liverpool seem to be regretting not capturing him already.
If Klopp and the Reds are to challenge in the coming seasons, they simply cannot afford to keep letting players like Sanchez slip through the net.
