Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern this week in anticipation of their side’s clash with Premier League leaders Manchester City, with the Reds bidding to be the first side to beat the Citizens in the league this season.
Jurgen Klopp’s men themselves go into Sunday’s encounter in great form having won 12 and drawn five of their last 17 games in all competitions, an unbeaten streak which has moved them above both Arsenal and Tottenham into fourth place in the table. And the Merseyside giants also progressed into the fourth round of the FA Cup last weekend with a 2-1 successive over bitter rivals Everton, setting them up perfectly for the visit of Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering City side on Sunday.
Thus, there are many buoyant and positive Liverpudlians in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be interested by a recent report from The Daily Mail, which suggests that striker Daniel Sturridge wants to leave the club, on the condition that his £30 million price-tag is matched.
The 28-year-old has struggled for regular football at Anfield ever since Klopp took over back in October 2015, and this season has again been a testing one for the England star with just five Premier League starts to show for his efforts.
As such, a place in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man World Cup squad is in seriously jeopardy if things don’t change soon, and recent reports suggest that the striker is seeking a move away this month, and Liverpool are happy to sanction a deal but only on the condition that his £30 million price-tag is met.
That figure could well price several sides out of the race for Sturridge, and with his wages likely to be high as well, it may be tricky for the 28-year-old to get the move he wants by January 31.
Landlord’s verdict: It hasn’t worked for Daniel Sturridge at Liverpool since Jurgen Klopp’s appointment as manager back in 2015, with the England star falling behind the plethora of attacking talent at the German’s disposal.
The likes of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and now Mohamed Salah have all been ahead of the 28-year-old in the pecking order, restricting him to five Premier League starts this term, at the same time raising huge doubts about his future.
However, the Reds are reportedly ‘willing’ to let Sturridge leave the club this month, but only on the condition that they receive £30 million for the striker, well over double the £12 million they paid Chelsea back in 2013.
But whether interested parties are indeed able to match that, as well as the forward’s wages, very much remains to be seen.
