Here in the Football Transfer Tavern we are interested with reports today from Sky Sports that Derby County boss Nigel Clough has told Liverpool that they will have to pay more than £6 million for Will Hughes.
The 18-year-old is regarded as one of the best young players in England and Brendan Rodgers’ side are understood to be leading the race the Rams star who has already made nearly 50 appearances for the Pride Park outfit.
Reds chief scout Dave Fallows watched Hughes during his fine display for the England Under-21’s against Scotland and this has encouraged Rodgers to bid for the creative midfielder.
However the Championship side have now made clear that Hughes would not come for a cheap price after reports suggested they could sign him for £6 million.
Clough said: “Nobody knows what we want or what the fee is going to be come the time, because we have not got a specific valuation in mind.
“Would it be more than £6m? Yes, I think it is fair to say that.
“We just think it is going to be a very, very substantial figure to tempt him away. We’ve had no bids or contact from anybody.
“If someone comes in through the front door and makes an official enquiry or bid, we will have to react to it.
“Unless there is somebody sitting there with an awful lot of money burning a hole in their pocket I cannot see it changing.”
If the Anfield outfit were to land the youngster during the current transfer window they could loan him back to Derby for the rest of the season as the Reds hope to ensure further playing time for the 18-year-old.
Will Liverpool land the highly promising youngster eventually? Let us know your thoughts below.
