Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are devastated following their 3-1 defeat against Real Madrid in the Champions League final, though our punters are remaining optimistic they will be back before too long.
The Reds entered the interval with the score level before Loris Karius threw the ball straight at Karim Benzema to put them behind. Sadio Mane’s equaliser was cancelled out by a Gareth Bale wonder goal before Karius dropped a long shot from the Welshman into his own goal. His howlers have now plunged his future into doubt.
Liverpool added the first signing of the transfer window recently after completing a £40m move for Monaco midfielder Fabinho with Naby Keita also arriving from RB Leipzig. A new goalkeeper is also on the shortlist following Karius’ performance with Simon Mignolet failing to stake his claim on the number one jersey.
Reports in Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo have suggested Jurgen Klopp will make a move for Barcelona goalkeeper – Jasper Cillessen. The Dutchman has fallen behind Marc Andre Ter Stegen in the pecking order in Spain, making just one appearance in La Liga. He is valued at £8.1m according to Transfermarkt and Barcelona are surely unwilling to let him leave for less than his release clause which is set at £51m.
In our punters’ opinion, a move for Cillessen would be extremely unwise. The Dutchman has featured in the league just twice since August 2016 and is not the world-class keeper that Liverpool need. Not since Pepe Reina have they had a number one that would get into their Premier League rivals’ squads. Signing Cillessen would be settling for second best yet again.
If the Reds are serious about landing a top goalkeeper, they must fork out the £80m price tags set for Alisson and Jan Oblak. Otherwise, they might as well keep Karius in between the sticks.
