There are excited faces here in the Football Transfer Tavern as the Daily Mail confirm Liverpool’s fourth summer capture in the form of Belgian international goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.
The club have long been pursuing the Sunderland stopper and after it seemed Pepe Reina was set to depart for Catalan giants Barcelona, the Reds upped their pursuit of the keeper.
The Merseysiders have agreed to pay in the region of £9 million for the Belgium number two and certainly have given Sunderland a substantial return for one of their prized assets.
Despite it now looking like Pepe Reina will remain at the club, Brendan Rodgers was keen to instil some competition into the squad and wanted someone to come in and challenge for the number one spot with Brad Jones considered more of a lesser choice.
The Northern Irishman is believed to be ready to give Mignolet a chance to prove himself as the number one at the club – news that will not go down well in the Reina camp.
The club could well have to pay Sunderland an additional £2 million for the 24-year-old in add ons but that did not dampen Rodgers’ mood as he claimed: “I am delighted that we have been able to sign one of the top goalkeepers in the Barclays Premier League.
“Simon will join a club that will give him an opportunity to demonstrate and improve his huge talent.”
Liverpool fans. Are you happy with the signing of Mignolet and your business so far this summer? What does this mean for Reina? Let us know your thoughts below.
