Liverpool supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern were confident of wrapping up their next summer signing in the form of Shakhtar Donetsk midfield star Henrikh Mkhitaryan within the next couple of days.
However reports this morning suggest the deal is not as clear cut as expected with the Ukraine-based club denying a deal with the Reds.
It was understood that Brendan Rodgers had agreed a £22 million deal to bring the Armenian international, who scored a record 25 goals from midfield last season, to Anfield with just a medical needed to complete the transfer.
Although he admits that the player would be available at the right price, he confirms that there is not yet an approach from the Reds.
Sky Sports quote him as saying: “As you know, there have been too many different conversations about Henrik Mkhitaryan.
“But the situation has been strongly and artificially inflated. I can say that we have had no communication from any member of Liverpool.
“Henrikh is an important player in our team. Shakhtar want to keep him but we are willing to listen and consider all proposals for his transfer.
“We have already parted with Willian and Fernandinho but the club will not just sell players.
“Soon we will also strengthen ourselves with quality players, designed to replace those who have left.”
Will Liverpool still conclude a deal for the golden boy of Armenian football? Is this simply stalling tactics from Shakhtar? Let us know your thoughts below.
