A popular topic of discussion among Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern of late has been Mamadou Sakho’s impressive form at Crystal Palace, with some Kopites even quipping that the club’s best defender isn’t at Anfield!
The Frenchman joined the Eagles on loan during the winter window after being frozen out of first-team action by Jurgen Klopp, who sent the centre-back home from a pre-season training camp in America amid numerous disciplinary issues.
This came just a matter of months after the player himself had been forced to serve a UEFA-imposed ban for an alleged doping offence (for which he was cleared) that saw him miss out on the Europa League Final and EURO 2016.
Despite not playing a single minute of completive action for Liverpool this season, Sakho has been excellent for Palace, helping the London club in their battle against relegation.
The Liverpool Echo have already revealed that selling the 27-year-old remains a priority for the Reds this summer with a £30m fee being sought, but speaking to Telefoot, the player himself claimed that he would be “happy” to head back to Merseyside:
“I still have a contract for three more years,
“If I were to wear the Liverpool shirt again, I would be happy to do so.
“I was late for training, something that happens everywhere. I paid a fine and I do not know what else I can do.
“It is up to the boss. He makes the decisions and I can only accept that. “And we will see what happens if my future is elsewhere.”
Sakho’s current salary is reported to be £105,000-per-week, which could make it tricky for Liverpool to find a suitor for the defender, no matter how well he performs between now and the end of 2016/17.
Liverpool need Mamadou Sakho back – agree?
