Liverpool supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their team lose 1-0 at Chelsea on Sunday to keep the race for a top four place in the Premier League very much alive.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their meeting with the West London outfit off the back of reaching the Champions League final with a 7-6 aggregate victory over Roma in midweek, although they did lose 4-2 at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday. And the Reds were unable to get back to winning ways at Stamford Bridge on Sunday as an Olivier Giroud header during the first half was enough to seal all three points for Antonio Conte’s side, thus moving them to within three points of Klopp’s Liverpool and with a game in hand.
As such, there have been many despondent and disappointed Reds supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their side can indeed get the win they need against Brighton next weekend to secure their place in Europe’s elite competition next term.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Liverpudlians to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for Juventus’ Sami Khedira as a part of a possible swap deal with current Reds midfielder Emre Can.
And were the £25.2 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) to indeed make the move to Anfield, he could provide fellow summer signing Naby Keita with the perfect midfield partner next term to help fire Liverpool to the Premier League title.
Ultimately, while the Reds backline has copped a lot of stick this term for their vulnerabilities in their own final third, some of that has to be put down to the lack of protection from those midfield players just in front.
Thus, it seems that the Merseysiders are in need of a more defensive-minded central midfielder with the ability to break up play and screen the back four, yet it doesn’t appear as though RB Leipzig’s Keita, who will join the club in the summer, will be that man.
Yet Khedira could be based on his efforts for Juventus and Real Madrid during his career to date, and with nine goals for the Italian giants this term en route to a third successive Serie A title, he continues to prove his worth further forward as well.
And with the 31-year-old having won the league title at every club he has been at so far having won two (soon to be three) at Juve, one in the Spanish capital, and one for Stuttgart back in 2007, not only would the Germany international provide the Reds with greater steel and guile in the middle of the park, but he’d bring a know-how in getting over the line in the league. There’s no coincidence that he has won that many league titles given how influential he has been to both his present and former employers.
Yes, Reds fans may be concerned that he is 31 and perhaps not at his best level, but 38 appearances for the Italian giants this term further underlines his capabilities in playing at the top level, and indeed for a side renowned for their defensive structure and organisation.
And if Liverpool are serious about winning the Premier League in the coming years under Klopp, they appear to need a more industrious midfielder in the middle of the park – Keita isn’t likely to provide that, but Khedira certainly could.
And between the two of them, they could form a formidable central midfield partnership – the sort that wins teams titles.
Thus, were they to indeed lure Khedira to Anfield in return for Can’s likely departure to Turin, the 31-year-old could be the perfect partner for summer signing Keita, at the same time helping to propel Liverpool into title contention next time round.
