Nathaniel Clyne’s Liverpool career surely looks to be coming to an end.
The former Southampton defender joined the Reds back in 2015 for around £15m and instantly become a first-team regular under Brendan Rodgers. Clyne’s place in the side was safe until an injury allowed Trent Alexander-Arnold a chance in the starting XI. The youngster’s form meant Clyne has remained on the sidelines after returning to full fitness.
When choosing to rest Alexander-Arnold, Jurgen Klopp has preferred to use Joe Gomez at right-back which leaves Clyne’s future at the club uncertain. The former England international would attract attention from a host of Premier League clubs, and Liverpool shouldn’t stand in his way if he does decide to depart. To replace him, the Reds should look to raid his former club Crystal Palace to sign wonderkid Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, the young defender has been one of the standout stars of the season after breaking into the first-team under Roy Hodgson. Despite a red card against Liverpool back in August, Wan-Bissaka has earned plenty of plaudits for his performances and received a call-up to the England U21 setup. The defender impressed for his country against Scotland and will be knocking on the door for a place in the senior side should his showings continue.
The 20-year-old would be a perfect replacement for Clyne and provide Alexander-Arnold with some much-needed competition. Wan-Bisakka excels in tackling, winning an incredible 4.6 tackles per game this season – more than any other Liverpool player. The youngster also reads the game exceptionally well, averaging 2.6 interceptions per game in the Premier League so far (WhoScored).
Palace will be unwilling to lose their prized asset, but the allure of Anfield could be too hard for the youngster to turn down.
