Liverpool supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their team suffer a 3-1 defeat in the Champions League final at the hands of Real Madrid last weekend.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their meeting with the two-times defending champions in Kiev full of confidence after getting past Porto, Manchester City, and Roma en route to the showpiece, although they were second-best on the night. A brace from Gareth Bale, the first one of the best goals ever seen in a Champions League final, alongside Karim Benzema’s opener sealed victory for the Spanish giants, thus securing a third successive European crown.
Subsequently, there have been many despondent and deflated Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, and they are unlikely to be cheered up by recent reports linking manager Klopp with the vacant role at the Bernabeu following Zinedine Zidane’s resignation.
And while it’s clear that the Reds need to add to their squad this summer, they simply have to retain the services of Klopp above all else during the close season.
Ultimately, there is no doubting that the former Borussia Dortmund chief has transformed Liverpool into one of the best teams in the country, having clinched back-to-back top four finishes in the Premier League.
The 50-year-old took over back in October 2015 at a time whereby the Reds were somewhat behind their fellow top six rivals and had just finished sixth in the top-flight, yet some brilliant, fast-flowing attacking football has since seen the Merseyside giants return to the Champions League.
And a mightily impressive run to the final of this year’s competition, getting the better of Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering City along the way, has shown Klopp to be exactly the right man to take Liverpool back to their former glories.
And that in part is down to his personality, Liverpool fans adore him, and indeed the intensity and attacking drive his teams play with – they scored 78 goals in the 2016/17 league campaign, and bettered that this time round with a magnificent 84 goals.
Thus, while there were some concerns among Reds supporters back in October last year, given Liverpool were ninth in the division, that Klopp isn’t the right man for the job, there’s little doubting that he is now taking the Merseyside heavyweights in the right direction.
This season’s Champions League final was the third Klopp major final has reached since taking over at Anfield, and while he has yet to taste success and bring a trophy back to Anfield, they are no doubt heading the right way under the German, and will be targeting major honours next time round.
As such, while additions are without doubt needed for Liverpool to bridge the gap to City next season, it’s more important that they retain Klopp’s services over the summer amid interest from Real Madrid.
