Danny Mills has told Football Insider it is “realistic” for Liverpool to sign Leroy Sane this summer, and that he would be a better and more realistic choice than Adama Traore.
The Anfield outfit are said to have targetted the Wolves winger this term after he has managed six goals and 10 assists in all competitions. However, the Midlands side will not sell for less than £70m, as Football Insider has revealed.
Former England international Mills, though, does not believe that Traore is good enough to replace either Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah should they depart, and instead suggested they make a move for the Germany international. He said: “Traore makes a lot of headlines because of his pace and power but to step into a title-winning side, to replace somebody like Mane or Salah – I do not think he is there yet.
“Somebody like Leroy Sane – possibly. He is coming back from injury and has been linked with a move away recently and could be surplus to requirements. He is young, a great talent and has experience. That would be more realistic but I do not know if Manchester City would sell to rivals.”
Of course, City would unlikely be desperate to sell to their rivals, but a move for the former Schalke star from the Reds is not beyond the realms of possibility. His cruciate ligament injury last year means he has missed the whole campaign, and Bayern Munich have been continually linked with his services. Even before his sustained spell on the sidelines, he was not a guaranteed starter for Pep Guardiola – he was included in the first XI for just 21 Premier League matches during the 2018/19 campaign.
Currently valued at £90m by Transfermarkt, he would also represent a significant outlay, but his stunning City record – he managed 16 goals and 18 assists last term despite not being one of the first names on the teamsheet – shows that he has the top level ability to fit in to Klopp’s side.
