Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern have just about got over their side’s disappointing Champions League final defeat at the hands of Real Madrid last month, what with their team going down 3-1 to the Spanish giants.
Jurgen Klopp’s men were full of confidence ahead of the Kiev showpiece on May 26 having beaten the likes of Porto, Manchester City, and Roma en route to the final, although they were second-best on the day. A brace from Gareth Bale alongside Karim Benzema’s opener sealed victory for Real, and while defeat will hurt many of our resident Liverpudlians, it shouldn’t detract from an otherwise encouraging campaign from the Reds, and one they should seek to build upon this time round.
As such, there are many optimistic and expectant Reds supporters in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent reports suggesting that Jack Wilshere could well leave Arsenal at the expiration of his contract this month.
And with several Premier League sides reportedly keen on the £18 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), Klopp’s Liverpool must seek to join and win the race for the England international, in what could turn out to be the bargain of the summer transfer window.
Ultimately, while injuries have decimated the vast majority of his career, there is little doubting that the 26-year-old is one of the most talented and gifted midfielders in the Premier League, with his skills on the ball about as good as anyone else currently plying their trade in the top-flight.
His vision is excellent and his eye for a pass is second-to-none, and with 38 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners last season, his highest tally since the 2010/11 campaign, one could argue that he is beginning to get over his regular injury worries.
And a summer off having missed out on selection for England’s World Cup squad can only serve to benefit Wilshere even further, and in a Liverpool midfield which could ideally do with another option, he could seriously flourish.
Klopp will lose Emre Can this summer at the expiration of his contract while it remains to be seen whether Adam Lallana can get back to his high standards after a long time out with injury – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is another currently out with injury.
And while Naby Keita will be moving to the club as of July 1, Klopp may feel that even more creativity and flair may be needed in the central midfield department – Wilshere could be that man.
Ultimately, a deal to bring Wilshere to Anfield would cost nothing given he is out of contract this summer – thus, they have very little to lose from luring the 26-year-old to Anfield, but could seriously reap the rewards if the midfielder can re-discover his best form in the coming years.
In fact, adding the midfielder could turn out to be the bargain of the summer window.
