Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern are slowly but surely getting over their team’s disappointing Champions League final defeat last month, which saw the Reds go down 3-1 to Real Madrid in the Kiev showpiece.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the two-times defending champions full of confidence after getting past Porto, Manchester City, and Roma in the knockout stages, although they were unable to get the better of the Spanish giants back on May 26. A brace from Gareth Bale alongside Karim Benzema’s opener was enough to seal victory for Real, in turn clinching them a third successive European crown, and 13th in their history.
As such, there have been many disappointed Reds fans in the Tavern in recent times, with several now turning their attentions towards the rest of the summer window, and thus what additions their side could make to close the gap on Premier League champions Manchester City.
And one man who could be on his way to Anfield is winger Moses Simon, as per recent reports, and were the Merseysiders to indeed get a deal done for the £5.4 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt), it would be crucial to their hopes of challenging for the title.
Ultimately, outside of the front three of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah, the attacking ranks are lacking the sufficient quality to compensate for any possible injury or suspension to the lethal trio.
Danny Ings may well have earned his move to Anfield courtesy of netting 11 goals for Burnley in the 2014/15 season, although he has spent the best part of his Reds career out injured, and as such it remains to be seen what level he can reach next term.
And with Dominic Solanke taking until the final game of the campaign to net his first goal for the club, it’s clear that the alternative options in that forward department simply aren’t good enough to deputise for messrs Firmino, Mane, and Salah.
Whereas the hugely talented Simon would give Klopp another exciting option in the final third of the pitch to call upon.
The 22-year-old Gent winger enjoyed a fine campaign in the Belgian First Division with six goals and three assists for the club, adding to the five goals and five assists he contributed in their run to third place last season.
Thus, it’s clear that the Nigeria international has a very bright future in the game but could also do a job when called upon in the present, and with blistering pace as well as the ability to play down both sides and indeed more centrally, he’d give Klopp another great option in the final third of the pitch.
And he would surely be effective on those occasions whereby the Reds are struggling to break down opposition backlines, while he’d also likely help Klopp’s side improve upon their record of dropping 17 points against sides that finished outside of the top six this season – it’s a deal they have to get done.
And for a reported £10 million, it could turn out to be a bargain, with Simon able to provide an alternative in the present, and indeed an option for the future.
Thus, the addition of the 22-year-old is crucial if Liverpool are to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
