Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the Champions League final this weekend, as their side go in search of a sixth European crown against defending champions Real Madrid.
Jurgen Klopp’s men go into their clash with the Spanish giants in Kiev off the back of beating Brighton 4-0 in their final Premier League encounter of the campaign, a result which sealed their place in the top four for next season. And with the European showpiece to come at the weekend, things could yet get a whole lot better for our resident Liverpudlians between now and the end of the season.
In the meantime though, there has been much for those Reds supporters lining up at the bar to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their side with a move for Burnley centre back James Tarkowski.
And the addition of the £5.4 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) this summer would certainly be a more important signing for Liverpool than that of Naby Keita, who will join the club during the close season.
Ultimately, 23-year-old Keita will be joining a Reds midfield that is already full of quality options, be it Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Georginio Wijnaldum, Adam Lallana, and Jordan Henderson, to name but a few.
Yes, the RB Leipzig man’s arrival would certainly strengthen those ranks even further, given he has proven to be one of the most exciting young players in Europe, but even if Emre Can does indeed leave the club this summer, it’s not a department which desperately needs addressing.
Whereas the centre back options are arguably an area which Klopp must seek to improve over the summer.
He has already done the hard work in luring Virgil van Dijk to Anfield from Southampton back in January, with his arrival having a huge impact on the backline, yet there remains some concerns about the season-long capabilities of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip as his central defensive partner.
Yet those doubts aren’t quite as apparent with Tarkowski, who enjoyed a wonderful season in the heart of Burnley’s back four, to the point that he earned his senior England debut back in March, and is on standby for this summer’s World Cup.
The 25-year-old started 31 of the Clarets’ 38 Premier League games this term and played a key part in helping them achieve one of the best defensive records in the division, having shipped just 39 goals during the campaign.
Defensively, Tarkowski has it all to succeed at top-flight level, and alongside someone like van Dijk who is both authoritative and indeed good with the ball at his feet, he could flourish, and they could thus develop a formidable centre back pairing.
And with the defensive unit what appears to need improving over the summer, a deal for Tarkowski would certainly be a more important one for Liverpool than that of Keita.
