Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been drowning their sorrows in the last couple of days after seeing their side fail in their quest to win this season’s Champions League following a 3-1 defeat in the final to Real Madrid on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Spanish giants full of confidence after their wonderful run through the competition, which saw them get past the likes of Porto, Manchester City, and Roma to reach the showpiece. However, they were second-best in Kiev on Saturday as a Gareth Bale brace alongside Karim Benzema’s opener sealed victory for Zinedine Zidane’s side, thus clinching them a third successive Champions League crown.
As such, there have been many despondent Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are turning their attentions towards the summer transfer window, and thus will likely be intrigued by recent reports linking their club with a move for Thibaut Courtois.
And following Loris Karius’ woeful display in Kiev on Saturday, it’s clear that the addition of the £54 million-rated world-class goalkeeper (as per Transfermarkt) would go some way to turning Liverpool into genuine Premier League contenders.
Ultimately, Pep Guardiola’s City ran away with the league this time round in finishing 19 points clear of second place Manchester United, and while their success can be put down to many factors, one of the biggest was the arrival and subsequent performances of goalkeeper Ederson.
Claudio Bravo simply wasn’t up to the job last time round in making several costly mistakes for the Citizens, and Guardiola wasted no time in replacing the Chile international given how crucial the goalkeeping position is in one’s team.
And Klopp must show the same level of ruthlessness this summer in replacing Karius with Chelsea’s Courtois.
26-year-old Courtois has proven to be one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League in the last few seasons, not least in playing an integral part in helping the Blues win the title back in 2017 in conceding just 28 goals and keeping 16 clean sheets for Antonio Conte’s side.
Undoubtedly, the Belgium international is the sort of world-class goalkeeper that any side will need to challenge for major honours, in the same way David de Gea is for Manchester United, and indeed Ederson at City.
Liverpool simply don’t have one of those in their ranks – both Karius and Simon Mignolet are decent and adept goalkeepers, but neither are going to win the Reds points and matches over the course of the season in the same way the aforementioned trio will.
And that is why they simply have to add Courtois to their ranks this summer if they are to bridge the gap to City next time round.
Guardiola’s City are only going to get stronger, deals for Riyad Mahrez and Jorginho are close to completion, so it’s up to Klopp to make Liverpool stronger, with the one position that desperately needs strengthening being the goalkeeping department.
And with Courtois reportedly set to leave Chelsea this summer given his contract situation, it’s a move they simply must make to challenge the Citizens next term.
