Liverpool supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side book their place in the Champions League next season courtesy of a 4-0 victory over Brighton on the final day of the Premier League campaign.
Jurgen Klopp’s men knew that a point would be enough to secure a second successive top four finish, but they produced an emphatic display to brush aside the Seagulls at Anfield thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah, Dejan Lovren, Dominic Solanke, and Andrew Robertson. And with a Champions League final to come against defending champions Real Madrid, things could yet get a whole lot better for the Reds between now and the end of the season.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Reds supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who will leave Juventus at the end of the campaign.
And were the Merseyside giants to indeed seal a deal for the World Cup-winning ace this summer, it would be a bigger signing for Liverpool than that of Naby Keita.
Ultimately, there’s little doubting that RB Leipzig’s Keita will add a huge amount to the Reds midfield next season, given he is just 23 years of age and looks to be one of the most talented young players in Europe at present.
But the Reds already have some decent options in the middle of the park in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Adam Lallana, to name but a few, and even if Emre Can does indeed leave this summer, they are hardly going to be short in that department.
However, there remains some concerns over the goalkeeping department given neither Loris Karius nor Simon Mignolet have eniterly convinced during their respective spells at the club, even if the former appears to have won Klopp’s vote of confidence having played every league game since New Year’s Day.
Yet were Buffon to arrive at the club this summer, regardless of his age, he’d bringing a vast amount of experience at the very top of the game to a side in need of a world-class goalkeeper to propel them into title contention.
The 40-year-old may not have won the Champions League during his career, but with 11 Serie A titles, five Coppa Italia crowns, and indeed a World Cup winner’s medal from 2006, he’s not been short of silverware.
Significantly though, not only would Buffon strengthen the first team at Anfield, but he’d also be the ideal mentor for German youngster Karius, who does appear to have received the nod from Klopp in the last few months, and as such could well be his long-term shot-stopper.
That itself will be a huge confidence booster, but having someone like Buffon around the club and in training on a regular basis can only help the 24-year-old fulfil his potential, and thus become the best goalkeeper he can be.
Thus, Buffon’s arrival would do a great deal both on the pitch in strengthening their ranks, but also off the pitch in terms of helping and mentoring the young players, be it Karius or others – that would surely be more than what Keita offers.
As such, while Keita’s arrival is eagerly anticipated by Liverpool fans, the addition of Buffon would be a bigger signing for the Reds this summer.
