Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their side maintain their 100% start to the new Premier League season.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their encounter with Leicester City on Saturday off the back of getting past West Ham, Crystal Palace, and Brighton in their opening three games to thus sit top of the division heading into their trip to the King Power Stadium. And while they weren’t at their best, the Reds got the job done as goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino before half time set them on their way to all three points, and while Rachid Ghezzal got one back for the Foxes, they weren’t able to deny Liverpool a fourth straight victory.
Thus, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent comments made by The Sun columnist Alan Shearer, who has played down the notion that it is too early to consider the Reds genuine title contenders.
Yet based on their efforts already this term, especially their victory at Leicester at the weekend, Shearer is absolutely spot on to suggest that Liverpool have already proven their title credentials.
Ultimately, much of the criticism levelled at the Reds last season was their inability to defend alongside their struggles to win when they were not at their best – they have already shown to have solved both of those issues this term.
Going into their trip to the King Power Stadium on Saturday, the Merseyside giants hadn’t conceded a goal in their opening three league games – interestingly, they didn’t manage to keep three successive clean sheets in the Premier League last season, but took just three games this term to change that.
The arrival of goalkeeper Alisson alongside the excellent centre back partnership of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez has obviously gone some way to laying those foundations for a solid defensive unit, thus suggesting that the Reds are slowly but surely becoming the force at the back they need to be to challenge for the title.
And Saturday’s win at Leicester was another nod towards their title credentials given that, for the most part, the Reds weren’t at their best and were certainly on the ropes at times in the second half, only to come out of the 90 minutes with all three points.
They showed resilience at the back to restrict Claude Puel’s men to few clear-cut chances, despite the territorial advantage the Foxes had, while they showed a clinical edge going forward in netting with two of their four shots on target.
And those traits weren’t always evident last season in dropping points to the likes of Swansea City, Stoke City, and West Brom over the course of the campaign – as has always been said, winning ugly is the sign of a very good football team.
And that, alongside greater defensive solidity, suggests that Shearer is right to label the Reds as title contenders, even at this early stage of the season.
