Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern are looking ahead to the 2018/19 Premier League season, as their side seek to build upon an impressive campaign last time round by finally sustaining a title challenge.
Jurgen Klopp’s men will go into the new season off the back of a fourth place finish in English football’s top-flight alongside a run to the Champions League final, where they were beaten by Spanish giants Real Madrid. Nonetheless, it’s clear that the Merseyside heavyweights are heading in the right direction under Klopp, with many of our resident Liverpudlians hopeful that their team can finally make a run at the Premier League title this season, with it now 28 years since they last won the league.
As such, there are many expectant Reds supporters in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking their club with a move for Porto left back Alex Telles.
And were Klopp’s side to indeed seal a deal for the £22.5 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) this summer, it would surely bring to an end Alberto Moreno’s testing career in the North West.
Ultimately, the Spaniard has endured a tricky time at Anfield since his move to the club back in 2014, with the 25-year-old generally failing to convince of his capabilities as a left back in the Premier League.
The former Sevilla star has still managed 136 appearances for the Reds in the last four years, but it was pretty clear what Klopp thought of him back in the 2016/17 season when midfielder James Milner was preferred to the four-times Spain international as the club’s chief left back for that campaign.
And while Moreno somewhat steadied the ship at the start of last season, starting 12 of their opening 14 Premier League matches, summer signing Andrew Robertson soon disposed the 25-year-old of the starting spot with several impressive displays, benefiting from Moreno’s injury back in December to become the Reds’ number left back.
And given the former Hull City star continued to go from strength to strength, it’s difficult to see how Moreno can force his way into Klopp’s first team plans even now, let alone if the highly-rated Telles does indeed make the move to Merseyside during the close season.
Were that to indeed happen, Moreno would be pushed even further down the pecking order at Liverpool, and potentially out of the club altogether this summer – thus, his testing time at Anfield could well be over if the Reds do indeed add Telles to their squad during the close season.
