Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been drowning their sorrows in the last few days after seeing their team lose the Champions League final at the hands of Real Madrid in Kiev little over a week ago.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into the European showpiece going in search of a sixth crown in the competition, yet knowing that they had to be at their very best to dethrone the two-times defending champions in the Ukrainian capital. Yet the Reds weren’t quite at it in Kiev as a brace from Gareth Bale alongside Karim Benzema’s opener sealed victory for the Spanish giants, in turn securing a third successive Champions League title, and 13th in their history.
As such, there have been many despondent Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, and their mood is unlikely to be improved by recent reports which suggest that target Alisson is holding out for a move to the Bernabeu.
Thus, having seemingly suffered a big blow in their pursuit of the Brazil international, Liverpool must now turn their attentions towards another goalkeeper this summer, namely £54 million-rated ace Thibaut Courtois (as per Transfermarkt).
Reports last week detailed that Chelsea may seek to cash in on the Belgium international this summer given the current situation surrounding his contract, and that must be music to the ears of Liverpool boss Klopp following the disastrous performance of his number one Loris Karius in the Champions League final.
The young German was at fault for two of Real’s three goals in Kiev last weekend to further question his credentials and thus his ability to help the Reds challenge for the title, with reports since then suggesting that Klopp is stepping up his search for a new shot-stopper.
And Courtois could be that man, as the 26-year-old would bring genuine world-class goalkeeping ability to Anfield in their quest to finally end many years of hurt in the league.
Ultimately, the Belgian ace has been a stalwart in the Blues goal ever since returning to the club following a loan spell at Atletico Madrid back in 2014, not least in helping Antonio Conte’s side win the Premier League in the 2016/17 campaign by conceding just 28 goals in 36 appearances.
And with 15 clean sheets this time round as well, the 26-year-old remains one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, with it arguable that he is among the top calibre of shot-stoppers alongside the likes of David De Gea and Ederson currently playing in English football’s top-flight.
And if Liverpool are serious about challenging Manchester City for the title, adding a world-class shot-stopper like Courtois is vital to their chances, as while Karius may well have lost the Reds some points this term, Courtois arguably gained some for Chelsea.
And with title-winning experience to call upon, the Reds would immediately become a more experienced and all round better side were Courtois to line up between the sticks.
Thus, with the Belgium international’s future seemingly away from Stamford Bridge, alongside speculation that Alisson is holding out for a move to Real Madrid, Klopp’s Liverpool must turn their attentions towards landing Courtois this summer.
