Alisson unlikely: Now Liverpool must focus their efforts on landing £19.8m-rated ace

Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern are just about getting over their team’s disappointing Champions League final defeat at the hands of Real Madrid last month, what with the Reds going down 3-1 to the Spanish giants.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the two-times defending champions off the back of beating Porto, Manchester City, and Roma to reach the showpiece, and thus were full of confidence that they could get the job done in Kiev on May 26. However, the Merseysiders were second-best in the Ukrainian capital as a brace from Gareth Bale alongside Karim Benzema’s opener sealed victory for Real, their third successive Champions League crown, and 13th in their history.

As such, there have been many despondent Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, and their mood is unlikely to be improved by recent reports suggesting that target Alisson is happy at Roma.

And with a deal for the Brazil international now seemingly unlikely, the Reds must focus their efforts on landing £19.8 million-rated shot-stopper Jack Butland (as per Transfermarkt).

Despite being a part of a Stoke City side relegated from the Premier League this season, the 25-year-old was a rare bright spark in an otherwise disastrous campaign at the bet365 Stadium, with Butland keeping six clean sheets and shipping 61 goals in 35 league appearances for the Potters.

And while those numbers aren’t overly flattering, the England international deserves credit as, if it weren’t for him and indeed Xherdan Shaqiri, the Staffordshire-based outfit would have been relegated a lot sooner.

And the 25-year-old has clearly done something right as he will be on the plane to Russia this summer for the World Cup, and very much remains in the running to be Gareth Southgate’s number one for England during the finals.

Thus, given his efforts for Stoke in recent times, Klopp should seriously consider luring Butland to Anfield in a bid to solve his own goalkeeping dilemma, a dilemma brought about by Loris Karius’ shocker against Real Madrid last month.

The young German made two big errors in defeat to Real Madrid to call into question whether he is indeed good enough to be the long-term number one at Anfield, with many in the Tavern of the opinion that he simply isn’t.

And with the Reds eyeing a sustained Premier League title challenge next season, they need a top-quality goalkeeper between the sticks to win them the games and points the likes of Ederson, Thibaut Courtois, and David De Gea have done in recent years – Butland could be that man.

And given Stoke were relegated from the top-flight, any deal will be a lot easier for the Reds given Butland’s likely desire to be playing Premier League football and overall need to remain in the England set-up.

As such, while a move for Alisson is not completely off, the fact he is happy at Roma will likely make life difficult for Liverpool, and with the Reds simply in need of a goalkeeper, they have to turn their attentions towards Stoke’s Butland.
