Liverpool needed a creative midfielder to help break the deadlock against Manchester City at the weekend.

The Reds were unable to bring Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane into the game against the Citizens. Jurgen Klopp opted to use Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner in the engine room which provided plenty of graft but not much craft. Naby Keita was introduced after 20 minutes but still needs to acclimatise to life in the Premier League.

A number ten was needed in the summer, and the performance against City highlighted the need for a playmaker in the Liverpool midfield. Their forwards were starved of service and Liverpool were desperate for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to help break the lines. With the England international sidelined for the foreseeable future and Adam Lallana also injured, signing a playmaker in January should be a must.

One man Klopp could target is Schalke maestro – Amine Harit. Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the 21-year-old has emerged as one of the brightest prospects in the Bundesliga after breaking into the first-team at the Veltins Arena. Under the German’s guidance, he could develop into a Premier League star.

Harit is an excellent dribbler, combining a low centre of gravity with silky skills. The Morocco international has averaged 2.4 dribbles per game so far this season, more than any other Liverpool player, highlighting what he would add to the team. The youngster has also averaged 1.4 key passes per game, a total only bettered by Salah, Milner and Andrew Robertson (WhoScored).

Still improving and developing, moving to Merseyside in the New Year could be a perfect move for both parties.
