Liverpool fans were delighted to see Joe Gomez commit his long-term future to the club last week.

The Reds have worked endlessly to tie their key players to new contracts with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all signing long-term deals in recent months. Gomez has enjoyed a crucial role in the Liverpool side this season, striking up a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the defence. The England international, who will miss around six weeks with injury, was rightly rewarded with a new contract that will keep him at Anfield until 2024.

The January transfer window opens in less than a month, but Jurgen Klopp isn’t expected to add to his squad after strengthening so heavily during the summer. Instead, he should focus on securing the future of another of his key squad members – Andrew Robertson.

Valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt, the left-back joined the club in the summer of 2017 from relegated Hull City for just £8m. Robertson initially struggled following his move to Merseyside and failed to displace Alberto Moreno in the starting eleven. However, an injury to the Spaniard gave the Scotsman the chance he needed to stake his claim for a starting berth, and he has never looked back.

Robertson is now one of the first names on the team-sheets for Klopp after becoming a cult hero on the Kop following some lung-busting performances. The former Dundee United man helped the club reach the Champions League final during his debut season, and his excellent showings have continued in the new campaign; Robertson has five assists to his name already. A threat going forward and solid in defence; the defender has proved to be one of the bargains of the century.

His current deal at the club expires in 2021 and no-one else in the Liverpool squad deserves new terms.
