Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side clinch a top four place in the Premier League courtesy of a routine 4-0 win over Brighton on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men needed just a point from their final day encounter to secure Champions League football for next term, but they went one better and produced a fine attacking display to sweep aside the Seagulls at Anfield last weekend. And with a Champions League final against Real Madrid to come a week on Saturday, our resident Reds fans are growing increasingly excited about the prospect of their team winning a sixth European crown in Kiev next week.
In the meantime though, there has been much for those Liverpudlians lining up at the bar to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who will leave Juventus at the end of the season.
And were the £1.8 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) to indeed make the move to Anfield this summer, it would all but end Simon Mignolet’s stint at the Merseyside giants.
Ultimately, the Belgium international has fallen behind Loris Karius in the pecking order this season, with the 30-year-old last featuring in the Premier League back on New Year’s Day in their 2-1 win at Burnley.
Since then though, Mignolet has had to play second-fiddle to the young German shot-stopper, who has steadily improved as the campaign has progressed to consign the 30-year-old to a regular spot on the substitute’s bench, and thus out of the side.
And with Klopp seeming to back Karius to be his long-term number one, Mignolet’s future prospects at Anfield don’t look great anyway, let alone if 40-year-old Buffon were to make the move to the club this summer as well.
Yes, the Reds may only get a year or two out of the Italian legend, but that’s one or two years that Mignolet, at the age of 30 and being in and around the Belgium national team, simply cannot avoid to waste without commanding regular football.
Ultimately, the Belgian star has done a solid job at Anfield since his move there from Sunderland back in 2013, but he has never been the world-class shot-stopper, in the same way David de Gea is for Manchester United and Thibaut Courtois is for Chelsea, they have needed to sustain a title push – Buffon could be though despite his age.
And with Karius seemingly backed by Klopp, Buffon’s arrival would push Mignolet even further down the goalkeeping pecking order, and potentially out of the club altogether.
