Beating European giants to Christian Eriksen would give Liverpool exactly what they need

According to a recent report from AS, there is Premier League interest in playmaker Christian Eriksen. The 26-year-old currently plays his football in the English top-flight with Tottenham and has done so since leaving Ajax back in 2013, but with his contract entering its final 18 months, his future at the North London outfit appears far from certain.

Spanish giants Real Madrid have been linked with a move for the £72 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) in the last few days, yet recent reports detail interest from Premier League duo Chelsea and Manchester City as well to underline just how tough a job it will be for Daniel Levy to convince the Denmark international of a stay at Spurs.

And Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool should make it even more difficult for the Tottenham chairman by joining the heavyweight race for the contract rebel, as his arrival at Anfield would give the Reds exactly what they need in the middle of the park.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the Merseyside giants are very much in position to land their first league title since 1990 given they sit top of the Premier League table and four points clear of Manchester City, but their defeat to the Citizens at the start of the month did highlight a possible weakness in Klopp’s side, namely a lack of creativity in the centre of the pitch.

Yes, the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, and James Milner have done well in the middle of the park in providing a solid platform from which the front men can perform, yet none of them possess that killer pass or creative dynamism to aid the transition from defence into attack.

Adam Lallana certainly has it, as exemplified by his excellent season in 2016/17, but injuries are never too far away from the England international, while another option is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, although he won’t be ready to return to action for at least another couple of months, and only time will tell how long it takes him to reach his best level once again.

Yet there appears to be no better answer to that midfield conundrum than Tottenham’s Eriksen, who has showcased his ability as one of the most effective creative players in the Premier League in the last few years.

The 26-year-old made the move to Spurs having excelled at Dutch giants Ajax, yet he has taken it to another level in North London with 62 goals and 78 assists in 253 games for Pochettino’s side, 45 goals and 59 assists of which have come in the Premier League.

And with at least ten assists in each of his last three full seasons in the English top-flight, the Denmark international has been a huge asset to Tottenham over the years and has played a key part in their rise to become one of the best teams in the country – in fact, a lot of what good Spurs produce in the final third comes through the 26-year-old.

Yet the former Ajax man also has great qualities in a more central midfield role slightly further back in being able to dominate the ball and link defence to attack – yes, he may not be the best off the ball in making tackles and interceptions, but Liverpool are already well catered for in that department.

But what Eriksen has, which many of the current Reds options don’t, is that incredible quality on the ball in the middle of the park to score goals and indeed create them – the likes of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah would have a field-day with the 26-year-old just behind them.

Yes, winning the race for the Danish ace could prove tricky given the calibre of clubs seemingly in for him, but Liverpool must add their name to the list, as the 26-year-old is exactly what they need in the centre of the pitch.
