Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern are slowly but surely getting over their side’s disappointing Champions League final defeat last month, what with the Reds going down 3-1 to Real Madrid in the showpiece.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Spanish giants full of confidence after getting past the likes of Porto, Manchester City, and Roma en route to the Kiev final, although they were second-best on May 26. A double from Gareth Bale alongside Karim Benzema’s opener was enough to seal victory for Zinedine Zidane’s side, in turn clinching a third successive Champions League crown, and 13th in their history.
Consequently, there have been many despondent Liverpudlians in the Tavern in the last few days, several of whom are turning their attentions towards the summer transfer window, and as such are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking their club with a move for Alex McCarthy.
And while the 28-year-old is a better shot-stopper than current Reds number one Loris Karius, his arrival still wouldn’t solve Liverpool’s goalkeeping woes heading into the new season.
Ultimately, the goalkeeper department has been a problem area at Anfield for a while now, with neither Karius nor Simon Mignolet doing enough to convince of their capabilities between the sticks.
And while the former got the nod from Klopp for the majority of 2018, his shocker in the Champions League final is only going to heighten the need for a world-class goalkeeper to help inspire the Reds to a Premier League title challenge.
And while Southampton’s McCarthy has proven himself to be an accomplished top-flight shot-stopper this season, he isn’t of the world-class calibre the Merseysiders need to bridge the gap to Manchester City.
The 28-year-old was called upon by former Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino back in December to replace Fraser Forster between the sticks, and he delivered a fine second half of the campaign to keep the England international out of the side.
And having played a big part in keeping the South Coast outfit in the Premier League, he has since been linked with a move away to both Liverpool and Tottenham, yet the Reds simply must be more ambitious because, while McCarthy is better than Karius, he’s not of that world-class standard.
And given the impact the likes of Thibaut Courtois, David De Gea, and Ederson have had on their respective sides in the last few seasons, it’s clear that a goalkeeper of that calibre is needed if Liverpool are to challenge for the title – McCarthy simply isn’t of that standard.
So while the Englishman would be an upgrade on messrs Karius and Mignolet, his arrival wouldn’t completely banish Liverpool’s goalkeeping woes.
