Big boost emerges for Liverpool ahead of Porto clash

Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side get back to winning ways in the Premier League courtesy of a 2-0 success at relegation-threatened Southampton on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the South Coast outfit off the back of a 2-2 draw at home to fellow Champions League chasers Tottenham, which was an ultimately disappointing result given they led Mauricio Pochettino’s side with just seconds of the game to go. Yet the Reds put that frustration behind them by easing to victory at St Mary’s on Sunday, with goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah securing a routine win for Klopp’s side, thus moving them to within two points of second place Manchester United.

Thus, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in the last few days, several of whom are likely to be further encouraged by a recent report from The Liverpool Echo, which outlines a big boost regarding the fitness of defender Joe Gomez ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash at Porto.

The 20-year-old has featured 26 times in all competitions this season for Klopp’s side to underline his growing prominence in the Liverpool chief’s plans, with his fine efforts earning him a surprise call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad back in November.

However, the versatile defender has missed the Reds’ last two league games against Tottenham and Southampton due to injury, yet recent reports suggest that he is travelling with the squad for their trip to Porto in the first leg of their last 16 Champions League encounter on Wednesday.

And given how impressive Gomez has been for Klopp’s side this term, this news is sure to come as a big boost to the Reds boss, as well as our resident Liverpool supporters.

Landlord’s verdict: Joe Gomez has gone from strength to strength under Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp this season, resulting in him earning a surprise call-up and indeed two caps for England back in November of last year.

The 20-year-old has missed the Reds’ last two Premier League games though due to injury, yet recent reports suggest that he is in the squad for their trip to Portuguese giants Porto in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 clash on Wednesday.

And this is sure to come as a big boost to Klopp and his side, who would dearly love to take an advantage back to Anfield ready for the second leg in a fortnight’s time.
