Bringing £40.5m-rated lynchpin back to England would complete Liverpool’s best team in years

Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are devastated following the Champions League final against Real Madrid, though our punters are hopeful they will be in another final very soon.

The Reds were beaten 3-1 in Kiev with Loris Karius making two horrendous errors and Gareth Bale netting arguably the best goal in Champions League final history. Despite their defeat, Liverpool are definitely on the rise with a quality squad and more additions on the way. Naby Keita’s transfer was already confirmed before Jurgen Klopp sealed a deal for Monaco midfielder Fabinho.

A new goalkeeper should also be a priority as well as a partner for Virgil van Dijk in the Liverpool defence with Dejan Lovren struggling to perform like he did against Madrid consistently. To be considered genuine title contenders, they should make a move for Bayern Munich defender – Jerome Boateng. The former Manchester City man has been plagued with injuries in recent seasons but remains one of the world’s best defenders.

Valued at £45m by Transfermarkt, Boateng made 19 appearances in the Bundesliga last year and nine in the Champions League. The German is a colossal defender who is excellent in the air but also fantastic with the ball at his feet. He averaged 8.9 successful long balls per game last year, according to WhoScored, which could help Mohamed Salah net even more goals next year.

At 29-years-old, he is entering his prime. A hugely experienced defender would be a welcome addition to the Liverpool backline consisting of youngsters such as Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Indeed, right now, Liverpool have arguably their best team in years and the signing of Boateng would certainly move to complete their side.

If Liverpool want to challenge for the title, Boateng would help them do it.
