Liverpool supporters have been somewhat quieter in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their team only muster a 0-0 draw at home with Stoke City on Saturday, although they remain in a commanding position to secure another top four finish.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the relegation-threatened Potters off the back of thumping Roma 5-2 in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday, thus very much with one foot in the showpiece in Kiev next month. Yet they were unable to keep that momentum going after only managing a scoreless draw with Paul Lambert’s Stoke on Saturday, and while fifth place Chelsea did beat Swansea City 1-0 later in the day, the Reds still sit six points clear of last year’s champions in the race for a top four place.
Thus, there have been many deflated Reds supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their side can get the job done against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday and thus reach the Champions League final.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Liverpudlians to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that midfielder Emre Can has penned a deal with Serie A leaders Juventus.
And with it looking likely that the 24-year-old will leave this summer, the Merseyside giants must now seek to replace the Germany international with £16.2 million-rated ace Wilfred Ndidi (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, Can has grown into a quality central midfielder since Klopp took over at Anfield back in October 2015, with the former Bayern Munich man playing an integral part in helping the Reds return to the top four last season with 32 Premier League appearances.
Thus, while he has suffered from injury at times this time round, it’s clear that the Merseysiders will need to replace Can come the summer in a bid to bring greater steel to the Liverpool midfield department – the sort of steel that many feel is needed for the Reds to become genuine title contenders.
And Ndidi could be the man to do just that.
The 21-year-old has enjoyed a fine start to life in English football since his move to Leicester back in January 2017, appearing 61 times for the Foxes, including appearances in all but two of their Premier League games this time round in their run to ninth place in the division.
And with four assists so far this term, not only has Ndidi proven his worth at breaking up play and providing industry in Claude Puel’s midfield, but he also has ability on the ball as well, and ultimately could be the ideal man to come in and replace Can in Klopp’s midfield.
Liverpool have indeed been linked with the Nigeria international in recent times as they eye that midfield addition which could prompt a Premier League title push next season, and given his fine start to life in England at Leicester, Ndidi could well be the man to replace Can next season.
