Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team book their place in the Champions League for next season courtesy of a fourth place finish in the Premier League.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their final match of the campaign against Brighton on Sunday needing a point to guarantee another top four finish, yet they produced another attacking masterclass to sweep aside the Seagulls 4-0 at Anfield, thus eventually finishing five points clear of fifth place Chelsea. And with a Champions League final to come in nine days’ time, things could well get even better for our resident Liverpudlians in the Tavern before the season comes to an end.
Subsequently, there are many thrilled and optimistic Reds fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are beginning to turn their attentions towards the summer, and as such will be intrigued by recent reports from ESPN suggesting that they are closing in on the signing of Chelsea youngster Isaac Christie-Davies.
And with a deal for the 20-year-old seemingly close, the Merseyside giants must now turn their attentions to luring fellow Chelsea star David Luiz to Anfield in a bid to bolster their title chances next season.
Ultimately, while there is little doubting that the Reds backline has improved since the addition of Virgil van Dijk back in January, there still remains some concerns regarding the capabilities of the likes of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip over the course of the campaign.
Yes, both of whom are clearly very adept centre backs, but both have made high-profile errors this term to call into question whether they have what it takes to form a formidable partnership with van Dijk to inspire Liverpool to the title.
Whereas those doubts aren’t there regarding Luiz’s ability, who little over 12 months ago played an integral part in helping Chelsea win the Premier League title under Antonio Conte, with the Brazil international doing a wonderful job in the heart of the Italian’s back three.
Yes, Klopp rarely utilises a back three and as such some Liverpool fans may be concerned by Luiz’s suitability, but the 31-year-old also showed a maturity last term in seriously enhancing his defensive abilities, which simply weren’t evident during his first spell at Chelsea between 2011 and 2014.
As such, the Brazilian star has proven his worth in the Premier League in the last few years, and having helped the Blues to the title little over a year ago, he possesses the know-how to help Liverpool finally get the job done after many barren years without a league crown.
What’s more, his Chelsea career remains uncertain having fallen down the pecking order this season, and as such Klopp should seek to add to Christie-Davies’ imminent arrival with another from Stamford Bridge in the form of the £25.2 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
