Liverpool are said to have had their boys out to watch the 17-year-old starlet in recent matches and a bid of £10million would be enough to secure the striker’s services.
At just 17 he has been tipped to become a real star for the future with interest from Tottenham and Arsenal. However, then manager, Roy Keane, was unwilling to let the youngster go and even announced that should Wickham leave that he would have been ‘lynched’.
Following the termination of Keane’s deal with Ipswich, the door has been left open for the 17-year-old. Offers will now go through the board and a large bid for the player could turn some heads.
Wickham is yet to score for Ipswich this season despite being named ‘young player of the month’ last April when the youngster scored 3 goals in just 4 games. However, he is still regarded as one of England’s brightest prospects but it is doubtful that any club would want to offer his full £10million asking price given his age. A more likely deal would consist of a cut-price purchase and a straight loan deal back to the Tractor Boys for the remainder of the season.
Should any deal occur, it would certainly be a statement of intent from the Merseyside club as they look to build for the future. Following a torrid season so far, many fans have called for an influx of big signings to save their troubled campaign. Such a move from the Reds would suggest that the board are looking to re-build their squad over time.
So what say you Liverpool fans? Is £10million a bit steep for potential? Or is this guy the real deal?
