Copa America star sensationally calls off Mexico move to force imminent Liverpool switch

When Jurgen Klopp was spotted at the Copa America clash between Argentina and Chile, the Transfer Tavern was rife with talk about the notion of seeing Gonzalo Higuain arrive at Anfield.

However, a school of thought emerged more recently that the German was in fact scouting Argentine defender Gabriel Mercado instead.

While the River Plate man had seemed destined for a move to Mexican side Monterrey, the club have now confirmed that that deal is off.

On their official website, the Liga MX outfit have revealed the 29-year old has renegaded on the agreement they had with him, amid links with the Reds.

Argentine newspaper Clarin suggest his U-turn is in order to force through a move to Klopp’s new look Kop plot.

Defensive frailty was a sewing motif of Jurgen Klopp’s early tenure on Merseyside, though he has made moves to rectify it.

Having already signed Joel Matip on a free, the former Borussia Dortmund coach is taking the steps required to restructure his backline.
