Coutinho replacement: Liverpool must look to bring £19.8m-rated ace back to England

Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern can’t wait for the new season to begin to watch Fabinho and Naby Keita tear up the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp bolstered his midfield by splashing almost £100m on the pair who will provide competition for James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum in the engine room. The signings give the German plenty of different options heading into another gruelling season. Both Fabinho and Keita made their debut against Chester at the weekend as Klopp’s new era got underway.

An attacking midfielder is still high on Klopp’s priority list after watching a deal for Lyon forward, Nabil Fekir, collapse at the last hour. Thomas Lemar was also a target, but the Frenchman completed a £63m move to Atletico Madrid earlier in the window. The former Borussia Dortmund boss must now seek alternatives.

The perfect signing could be Marseille playmaker – Dimitri Payet. Valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, the Frenchman is no stranger to the Premier League after spending two years with West Ham United. His performances in England were a joy to behold and earned him a spot on the shortlist for Players’ Player of the Year back in 2016.

His form continued after completing a £25m move back to Ligue 1. Payet was crucial to Marseille reaching the Europa League final last season, scoring ten goals and registering 20 assists in all competitions. The 31-year-old was expected to travel to Russia as part of France’s World Cup squad before a hamstring injury ruled him out of contention.

Reportedly, Marseille are willing to part ways with their prized asset and has been offered the chance to return to West Ham. He may be approaching the end of his career, but Payet remains a top playmaker. Liverpool could offer him Champions League football and the opportunity to challenge for the title.
